PLATES FOR TRACTORS
OWNERS MUST OBTAIN THEM. AN UNUSUAt COURT CASE. The first of its kind to be brought in Ashburton, a ease came before the Alagistrate’s Court this morning in Avhich a farmer Avas charged Avith liaving operated a tractor without number plates. The farmer, EdAvard Woods, Avas fined £l, Avith 12s costs. Traffic Inspector W. G. Letliam stated that he stopped the tractor on tile Hinds road. It did not, luwe any number plates. Under the regulations, tractors and such like farm vehicles Avere exempt from the payment of heavy traffic fees, but the owner must make application for that exemption and obtain number plates. When the plates Avere handed o\*er the owner had to pay the third party risk insurance fee. The case had been brought as a Avarning.
The Magistrate (Air H. Alorgan): It can’t be treated as just a Avarning. This vehicle Avas on the road and if there had been an accident because of it there Avould have been no third party insurance. The oAvners of these A'ehicles should know the regulations.
