ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS. MATCHES ON SATURDAY. The competitions of the Ashburton County Cricket Association were continued on Saturday in good weather, with the grounds slightly dead after recent rains. The eight ball over and two minutes interval between the outgoing and incoming batsmen were new rules introduced. SENIOR GRADE FAIRFIELD v. PUBLIC WORKS. A three-point win was secured by Fairfield in a match with Public Works. Public Works went to the crease first and compiled 76 runs, the only doublefigures scorers being L. Whinham 13 and J. O. Riddell 16. In their second they made 78 for the loss of seven wickets, Riddell making 14, C. Dacre 12, M. O’Neil not out 12, and C. Huffam 11. Fail-field’s innings extended only over three wickets, and the total was 204, Alf. McCall being run out when he had made 84, Dave McKay making 51, N. Phelan not out 33, and Don McKay 36. Bowling for Fairfield G. Willis took five for 21, and C. Brady five for 35 in the first innings, while in the second Brady took six for 42. For Publio Works the best performance was that of H. Had Ashburton not claimed seven minutes’ extra play to compensate for a correspondingly late start they would have drawn the match with Kia Ora, but the match resulted in a win for Kia Ora by six runs, which they made in the extra time played, both teams having 227 runs to their credit at the normal hour for drawing stumps. Ashburton batted first and, with seven wickets down declared, with a total of 227, to which A. A. Todd contributed 53, I. M. Hamilton 51, J. B. Nicoll 43 (retired), and P. Harper 39. Kia Ora made 233 runs for the loss of nine wickets, top scorer being H. Jordan with 83, while E. Jordan made 40, and M. Betts and S. Kerr 22 each. Bowling for Kia Ora M. Old Boys, batting first, were dismissed for 59 (G. I. Miller 25), and in their second innings declared with 93 for the loss of five wickets (R. G. Ross 32, R. Tulloch 20). Technical had 92 in their first innings, of which D. Brown made 30 not out, and N. Jones 25, and in their second had 30 up for the loss of three wickets when time came. Showers caused several adjournments. St. Albans, batting first, made 35 (Batstune 10, Esoott three for none, Graham four for 15), Old Boys, two for 83, declared (Menzies 41 not out). Old Boys won on' the first innings. St. Albans batted again and lost four for 64 (McCann 38). Sydenham made 138 {Butterfield, 38, Johnston three for 16), and West Christchurch 52 (Burt four for 16, Park three for 18). Sydenham won on the first innings. Old Collegians made 173 (Alexander 53, Byrne 29, Read four for 50, OromD three for 23) and Lancaster Park 231 for five (Shand 97 not out, A. P. Cobden 79). Park won on the first innings.
