IDLE MINERS.

WAIKATO TRUCKERS’ DEMANDS. MINISTERS TO ATTEND MEETING. ✓ (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND; September 7. The decision of truckers in the mines in the Huntly district to hold a stopwork meeting to-day and demand a hearing of their grievances resulted in all mines being idle. Before the ’buses and train left for the mines early this morning the meeting began and 1 was still in progress when the train left, The truckers and day-wage men are demanding an increase in wages and the application of the 40-hour week. At the present day wage the men a,re being paid 17s a day and they are demanding an increase to £1 a day. A mass meeting was held this afternoon at Huntly, when the union executive dispatched the following telegram to the Minister for Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb: “All mines are idle despite the previous resolution. We have invited the Hon. R. Semple to visit Huntly on Tuesday. Would you please support our invitation to Mr Semple, and, if possible, visit Huntly yourself? All mines are likely to be idle indefinitely.”

The reply from the Minister was as follows: “Please arrange a mass meeting of miners for to-morrow. Mr Semple and myself will be present.”
