RAIL TRAFFIC
IN ASHBURTON COUNTY.
GENERAL GOODS AND LIVE STOCK. SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. Goods sent out of Ashburton by rail in the railway year ended on March 91 last exceeded the imports by 35,003 tons, according to the Railways Statement which has just been released. The outward traffic consisted of 78,452 tons while the inward totalled 45,449 tons. An analysis of the figures shows:
As far as live stock is concerned the number of sheep and. P'S S , cattle and calves sent out of the County was much greater than the number brought in, as the following table shows: — Outward Inward
The total values of goods forwarded, from the several stations were:— £ Rakaia ... 18,922 Methven ... ... ••• 8,226 Chertsey 15,218 Ashburton 27,797 Tinwald ... ... ••• 10,312 Mt. Somers 4,261 Hinds ... ... ••• 7,238 No fewer than 15,056 rail journeys were made from Rakaia, 466 of these being first-class and 14,590 secondclass. At Ashburton the total was 61,855 (2548 first and 59,307 second'. Other County station figures were: Methven 6004 (19 first, 5985 second), Chertsey 4213 (2 first, 4211 second), Tinwald 3626 (77 first, 3549 second), Mount Somers 523 (all second-class), H'inds 5538 (34 first, 5504 second).
