OBITUARY.
MR C. H. HEWLETT. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 3. The death is announced of Mr Charles Howard Hewlett, aged 64, general manager and ’director of the Canterbury (K.Z.) Seed Co., Limited. He was chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, a director of New Zealand Newspapers, Limited, the Queensland Insurance Co., the Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Co., of' New Zealand, Limited, a member of the advisory committee of_the Wheat Research and Plant Research Institute, and a former president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. With Captain Euan Dickson as pilot, he was the first person to fly from Christchurch to Wellington, and was always prominent in aviation, being deputy-chairman of the Canterbury Aviation Company.
MRS M. J. MILES. The death has occurred of Mrs Mary Jane Miles, wife of Mr William Henry Miles, of. Matamata, at the age of 87. Mrs Miles was a daughter of Mr L. Kear, of Forest of Dean, England, and was married to Mr Miles in 1873. In 1880 she came to New Zealand with her husband and family in the ship Hereford, and landed at Lyttelton. After farming at Longbeach and Tinwald for a number of years, the family went by covered waggon to the Cheviot district, being original settlers on the Caveuhill road settlement. In 1904 Mr and Mrs Miles went to Matamata. There are three sons and two daughters, 28 grandchildren, and 18 greatgrandchildren.
