JUBILEE OAKS.

A.A.A. TO TAKE NO ACTION. OFFER FROM CHURCH VESTRY. The fate of the oak trees planted in the old Borough School grounds, now owned by Saint Stephens’s Church, to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, was considered at a special meeting of the executive of the Advance Ashburton Association last evening. The Association had previously protested against the decision of the church vestry to remove the oaks to make way for the new St. Stephen’s parish hall. The vestry informed the Association last evening that it could not accede to the request to leave the oaks as they stand, as this would interfere with the church building plan. It offered to allow the Association to remove the oaks, providing this were done at no cost to the vestry.

After a long discussion the Association decided that in view of the cost and the' likelihood of the removal not being successful, it would take no further action.
