WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
HAMPSTEAD BIRTHDAY PARTY. The Hampstead, Hall was crowded last evening on the occasion of the fifth birthday of the Women’s Institute. The hall was tastefully decorated. The President (Mrs H. J. Constable) welcomed all visitors and friends and the concert programme opened with singing the Institute Song. An enjoyable programme was presented as follows:—Solos, Miss Betty Opie, Messrs W. Corbett and H. Silverwood ; duets, Mrs Constable and Mr Silverwood,; pianoforte solo, Mrs A. Williams; instrumental items, Mr A. Colder; elocution-, Miss J. Rattray; operatic dance, Bernice Day; tap dance, Barbara and Pamela Hunt; play, Girls’ Junior Circle, the players being Misses Jean Ede, Mildred 0111ver, Lorna Graham and Betty Campbell. The programme concluded with a snowball action song given by the Junior Circle girls. A bouteous supper was served and the president cut the birthday cake. The secretary (Mi’s K. S. McEachen) lit the candles, and, Miss Ethel Chapman, acting for the treasurer (Mrs George Chapman) blew the candles out. Mrs R. Rose (vice-president) presented Mrs Constable and Mrs McEachen with beautiful bouquets. Birthday greetings were received from Mi’s F. Curtis and Mrs E. A. Cockroit for the Mid-Canterbury Federation Committee, Mrs Stewart Taylor (Group Convener), Wakanui, Timvald, Fairton, Ashton-Waterton, Allenton, and Ashburton District Institutes.
Mr G. T. Clarke thanked the president and members on behalf of the visitors for the evening’s entertainment, and, Mr K. S. McEachen endorsed his remarks. Dancing then took place, Mr G. T. Clarke acting as M.O. and Mrs Green as pianiste. Prizes won during the evening were: Gentlemen’s humorous competition, Mr K. S. McEachen; lucky spot waltz, Mr and Mrs G. T. Clarke; Monte Carlo, Miss Nancy Childs and Mr Selwyn Wilson. Mrs Constable moved a vote of thanks to performers, hostesses and all who had helped to make the party a success. A very pleasant evening closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
