THE WEATHER.

SOUTHERLY STORM LAST NIGHT. A violent southerly storm, arose over Ashburton last night, after mild, and warm week-end weather. The wind blew strongly from about 9.30, and was followed by rain, 53 points being recorded at the Domain weather station. Conditions were calmer to-day, but the wind was still from the south and the temperature was cold. The sky was overcast early, clearing later. The maximum temperature on Saturday rose to 56.9 degrees, and was 58.2 degrees yesterday The inside minimum last night was 35.1 degrees, and on Saturday night 33.4 degrees. A frost of 6.6 degrees was recorded yesterday; morning. Barometric pressure at 9 o’clock this morning had risen to 29.87 inches from 29.38 inches yesterday morning.

TO-DAY’S FORECAST, (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: A depression is passing off New Zealand and a moderate anti-cyclone is advancing across the north Tasman Sea. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Moderate to strong but later decreasing southerly to south-westerly winds. Weather cold and changeable with a few scattered showers, but soon improving. Seas rather rough to rough.
