MALTA AS NAVAL BASE
NOT TO BE ABANDONED. FIRST LORD DENIES RUMOURS. United Press Association-Copyright) ’LONDO’N, June 17. Invited in the House of Commons at question time, to make a statement regarding the future of the British Naval Base at Malta, the First Lord of the Admiralty (Sir Samuel Hoare‘), said: “‘I am glad of the opportunity oli contradicting rumours, which have received some publicity, that Malta is to be abandoned as a naval base. The Board of Admiralty has no intention of discontinuing the use of Malta as the principal naval base in the Mediterranean, and headquarters of the Med—iterranean fleet.” To a. supplimentary question as to the security of the base, Sir Samuel Hoar-e replied: “I would never say I am fully satisfied with any defence position, but I Would state categorically that as we have no intention whatever of evacuating Malta we shall certainly take every practical means to make its defences adequate to meet possible at-tacks.”—-—British Official Wireless.
