COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) RAKAIA. The Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild held its weekly bring-and-huy afternoon at the home of Miss T. Clark on Wednesday. The stall realised a satisfactory sum. A competition was wen by Miss M. Ashford, and items were given by Mrs Ashford, Miss M. Lee and Miss Ashford. The hostesses were Airs Lee and Aliss T. Clark. At a meeting of Court Star cf Rakaia, A.0.F., Bro. F. Behrnes presided. The secretary (Bro. W. A. Smith) presented the balance-sheet, which showed a profit on all funds. The following was the expenditure during the year: Sick pay to members, £75 10s; medical, £BS; maternity claims, £l4; central body, £25. HINDS. The Hinds Women’s Institute held its annual picnic at Peel Forest recently, when the members journeyed in cars. A very enjoyable time was spent. After a good picnic lunch a short meeting was held to accept nominations for the committee for the coming year. v MOUNT SOBERS. There was a good attendance at the sixth annual meeting of the Alount Somers Women’s institute, held in the library on Wedneafeiy afternoon, over which the presideiflr (Airs AY. J. Quantock) presided., The report stated that a successful year had been experienced. The various competitions had been keenly contested, the demonstrations much appreciated, and the travel talks most interesting. The institute had linked up with the Alid-Canterbury Federation, of which Airs F. Peter had been appointed a member of the executive. The institute had won third place in the Connolly Cup. The following members had taken part in the historical pageants at Timaru and Ashburton: Alesdames W. J. Quantoc-k, AY. Quantock, i\ peter, G. L. Hood, AI. L. Goodrich, Alisses E. Gifkins and AI. Comyns. Alembers had also taken part in the drama festivals held by the AlidCanterbury Federation, and Airs Quantock had attended the annual conference at Auckland. A box of goods had 1 been forwarded to St. Saviour’s orphanages, and another box would be forwarded to some other orphanage this year. Air AA T . A. H. Sharpe having left the district, All - F. W. Gifkins had been appointed auditor in his stead. The annual thrift evening in February, at which Aliss Nita Rosslyn (“The Girl in Red”) gave items and a travel talk, had been a financial success, and thanks were accorded all helpers. Airs R. Austin (voluntary organiser and a vice-president of the Alid-Can-terbury Federation) gave an interesting talk on the aims of women’s institutes, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Officers were elected as follow: —President, Mrs AY. J. Quantock ; vice-presidents, Alesdames G. L. Hood and A. R<. Beckley; committee, Alesdames F. Peter, AY. J. Comyns, L. AYood, A. R. Beckley, J. T. Wight-man, L. H. Ruddock, E. AY. Roberts, AI. L. Goodrich, Alisses M. Alorgan, and H. AYightman. Airs Goodrich was appointed lion. sec. and Aliss AA’ightman hon. treas. Airs Quantock thanked the retiring secretary (Airs AA 7 . J. Comyns) and treasurer (Aliss AI. Morgan) and all helpers for their loyal support.. A T otes of sympathy were passed with Alesdames A. Harvey and C. J. Johnston, in their illness, to Airs C. Harris in her husband’s accident, and to Airs J. W. Beatty in her father-in-law’s death. It was decided to enter for the Drama Festival, to be held by the Alid - Canterbury Federation. Thanks were accorded Air F. Alb Gifkins for auditing the hooks, and to- the Domain Board for the use of the library. Competitions resulted: Apple jelly, Airs R. Young 1, Airs G. L. Hood 2; bloom, Aliss B. Stephen l,Alrs AY. Quantock 2. Airs R. Edgar was in charge -of the sales table. At afternoon tea Airs G. L. Hood presented Mrs AA 7 . Comyns and, Aliss AI. Morgan with bouquets.
