CANADA’S PROGRESS.
TOWARD NEW, PROSPERITY. TORONTO, February 10. A chart prepared by a firm of advertising agents, J. J. Gibbons Limited, shows in graphic style, the progress made by Canada out of the depression. It portrays the distance travelled by some 22 factors of Canadian business from the low of the depression toward a point of average prosperity. The low line, is determined by the lowest index figure readied by each factor within the first four months of 1933, and average prosperity is accepted as the average ol -monthly indices for each factor over the, four years 1920 to 1929. The distance travelled is reckoned from the- indices lor the six months to the end of last November. ,On this basis of reckoning it is found that exports in general have recovered 66.7 per cent, of the lostground, and Empire exports 77.3 per cent., while imports have gained 50 and 80.6 per cent, respectively. Physical volume of business done is up 80 per cent., manufacturing production 93, automobile production 58, electric power 182, newsprint 195, mineral production 218, employment 80, farm products prices 35, retail sales 35. A combination of the 22 basic factors show s 58 per cent, of the distance traversed to a normal prosperity.
