HADRIAN WHO BUILT THE WALL Hadrian, the Roman Emperor, who made Britain a colony of Rome and built the wall that still divides England from Scotland, was horn 1860 years ago. The wall, a fortification against rebel Scots, was 73' miles long. It stretches from the Tyne estuary to Bowness on the Solway. Hadrian was one of the few Roman emperors who refused to bow to a decadent age. He abolished distinctions between Rome and its provinces. He would allow no money to he extorted from his subjects. He stabilised financial and judicial matters with a firm hand. Hadrian was responsible for the State taking over the Roman Empire’s postal service. 111-treatment of slaves was made a penal offence. Masters were forbidden to put slaves to death without first bringing them before a court of justice. Ho was a versatile writer, wrote his own autobiography—and wrote a panegyric on his 'motlicr-in-law, Matilda. *
