ASHBURTON’S GOOD SCORE. CENTURY TO P. HARPER. An excellent score was put up by the Ashburton County representative team on the first day of its match with South Canterbury for the Heathcote Williams Shield on the Domain Oval yesterday. The Ashburton team holds the shield from last season, and South Canterbury, the challengers, will have to obtain an outright win to gain it. Ashburton opened the batting' in its first innings, scoring 302 runs. The feature of the innings was the century hit up by P. Harper, who obtained 115 runs before being stumped by R. Murchison off J. Marriott. The innings included 12 fours. The other chief contributors to the total were H. Jordan (36), J. B. Nicoll (29), H. E. Cook (27), and G. Willis (28). Bowling for South Canterbury, E. A varied programme was presented at the annual sports meeting conducted at Hakatere yesterday by the rlakatere Sports Club and the' Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club. The programme included races, boxing and wrestling, a baby show, axemen’s events and a display of motor-cycle riding, while several stalls and side-shows were well patronised by the large attendance. I he Ashburton Silver Band, which played items during the afternoon, greatly added to the enjoyment of the programme.
