GENEROUS GIFT.

500,000 DOLLARS FOR UNIVERSITY (United Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, December 25. An unusual Christmas gift was received by Harvard University to-day. It was 500,000 dollars, given by Mr Thomas Lamont, a partner in the arm of J. P. Morgan and Company, to the three hundredth anniversary fund of the university for the engagement of a “scholar preeminent in the field of political economy.” Mr Lamont makes an interesting observation on the teaching of economics. He deprecates a division along conservative and radical lines, and commends “those principles which take into account the experiences of the past and at the same time are alive to the reeds and aspirations of the present.”
