VIC. RICHARDSON ON TEAM FOR AFRICA.

CONFIDENT OF SUCCESS. From Adelaide, Vic. Richardson, as Test captain, sent the following farewell message to the sporting public on the eve of the Australian cricket team’s departure for South Africa:—• “I convey to the sporting public _ of Australia the thanks of the touring Australian team for many expressions of goodwill. I feel that the team will in all spheres uphold the splendid traditions of Australian cricket in South Africa. The team is well manned for a long and strenuous tour : and we have Australia looking forward with confidence to a very successful trip. “Although it is to be regretted that several recent champions. have, through retirement and indisposition, been unable to make the trip, nevertheless the side will reflect the strength of Australian cricket. “The members of the team regret as much as the South African public that Don Bradman is unable to accompany the team ; but it is gratifying to know that he is speedily recpvering his health and strength, and will be a power in Sheffield Shield cricket this season.

“The bowling strength of the team should be all that is desired, as I consider Grimmett, O’Reilly and Fleet-wood-Smith the outstanding spin bowlers in the world. McCormick, Sievers and McCabe will supply the necessary variation to make an ideal combination. The batting of the side should be entertaining, with a fine blending of the dashing and sound types of player. With so many young and expert fieldsmen included, the standard which Australia has set in this department should be well maintained.”
