FRIENDLY MATCHES IN,COUNTY OLD BOYS BEAT ASHBURTON. A number of cricket clubs in Hie Ashburton County opened their IUJO-b seasons with friendly! matches on baturday afternoon, and conditions were fine and warm, though windy. The newly-formed Ashburton High School Old Boys’ Club defeated Ashburton by the narrow margin of torn runs. Ashburton batted first and knocked up 100 runs (D. Mcllroy 20, B. McSherry 16, R. McMillan not out 15, and R. W. Biggar 10). Old Boys replied with 104, A. Doig retiring when he had reached 21. R. F. Fear, J. Doig and P. Fear each contributed 11, and “Mr Extra’s”, total was 24. Bowling for Old Boys, A. Doig took four wickets for 12 runf, and P. Feai three for 9 For Ashbuiton J. Varcoe, with an average of five for 16, was the best performer with the ball.
