, THE BIG ROAD RACE. WATSON SETS A NEW RECORD. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Fresh road cycling history was made on Saturday when H. G. Watson, of Marshland, won the New Zealand championship for the sixth time in succession by putting up fastest time in the Waimate-Christchurch road race and set a new record for the course. His time of 6hrs 13min 22see beat his previous record of 6hrs IQmin 22sec, established in 1933. L. Stevens gained second fastest time, and L. G. Thomas third fastest. Stevens was a fifth of a second behind Watson, and Thomas finished in 6hrs 13min 28sec. These three scratch men rode together all the way. W. Ashman won the event, finishing strongly to- head off a challenge by C. B. Wareham by a length. L. Allen was a wheel away third. It was a thrilling finish, which brought the cheering spectators to 1 their feet. The winner’s time was 6hrs 23min 23sec. The first 10 placings are:—
