SIR A. HERDMAN’S SPEECH. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, October 1. In defiance of the ban on broadcast talks by political candidates, a, speech by Sir Alexander Herdman was broadcast from IYA at the opening of the antiques exhibition on Thursday* When the matter was referred to the station director to-day, lie refused to comment. The Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour (director of the Friendly ltoad), said that Sir Alexander’s name had been submitted by. him to the Board as one of several to give talks on “How I Look at Life,” and permission for him to talk had been refused. Replying to the Board’s inquiry regarding a talk by Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., for returned soldiers at the “Diggers’ session;-' Air Scrimgeour instanced talks by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) and the Minister for Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) on their return from England. EHte took it for granted that talks for soldiers would be approved.

OFFICIAL’S MISUNDERSTANDING. EXPLANATION BY THE MANAGER WELLINGTON, October 1. In a statement about the broadcast by Sir Alexander Herdman, Mr E. C. Hands (general manager of the Broadcasting Board), said to-dayi that inquiry showed that the Board s officei on duty at the Auckland ceremony knew only some 15 minutes before the commencement of the broadcast that Sir Alexander was to introduce her Excellency Lady Galway. The officer was under the impression thar Sir Alexander had withdrawn from the political campaign, and for that reason no objection was made to bis brief appearance before the microphone.
