£l3 A TON
POTAIO-ES IN STRONG DEMAND.
UNPRECEDENTED PRICES RULING.
DEMAND FROM NORTH ISLAND. Because of a strong demand from the North Island and a short supply in Mid-Canterbury potato prices have been soaring in Ashburton for several days and the unprecedented figure of £l3 a ton for Avliites and Dakotas Avas reached! yesterday. This is the highest price paid for potatoes in this district for at least 33 years, the figure going to within a few shillings of £l3 a ton in 1902. The highest price paid betAveen that date and the present time was £lO, in October, 1928. Merchants in Ashburton report that they have experienced an exceptionally busy Aveek, mainly on account of the sky-rocketing of potato prices. The demand began to set in about ten days ago because of the obvious lateness of the North Island neAv crop, and after having remained level at about £d 10s for white and £7 10s for Dakotas the prices jumped a- Aveek ago to £7 10s and £B, respectively. The demand for tubers became more pronounced from all sources and day by day increases of 20s and 30s a ton a day have been recorded. It is apparent that there are insufficient potatoes available in this district to satisfy all demands and merchants are scouring every likely place for small lots. Merchants anticipate that the demand Avill be maintained for at least a month and that the high prices Avill hold during that time.
