LOW-PAID WORKERS BENEFIT.

SYDNEY, September 24. The continued: improvement- in the economic condition of this State was reflected in the Budget speech of the Premier and Treasurer (Mr 8., S. B. Stevens) in the Newi ■ South Wales Assembly to-night. He said that revenue in the .year just ended amounted to: £43,572,071, and. expenditure to £45,870,984, the deficit being £2,298,923; The estimated revenue for the current year is £45,317,190, and expenditure £47,067,190, leaving a' deficit of £1,750,000, after providing £2,000,000 for sinking fund payments. . '
Air Stevens said the Government intended to reduce the wages tax. further on wages. less than £5 a week. This would apply from .January 1. The relief thus afforded would aggregate £500,000. There would also be a reduction of 10 per cent, in rail freights.on wheat, fruit and dairy produce after November 1. * r

There is 2J per cent, restoration of salaries for Public Servants provided for in the Budget.. A .bounty of two shillings per-case on orahges.sent to the United Kingdom will be provided. An outstanding feature of the Budget is the big increase in the expenditure for defence. purposes. -
