Pour hundred thousand bituminous coal miners in 27 States are idle today, for months of negotiations between the unions and the owners reached a deadlock early this morning. The strike was called at the last minute, for all differences had been settled except the rate of pay for pieCo mining and then the demands of tho union were only three cents a ton more than the owners offered; indeed, late to-day it was said that the conference came within 1V ceiits of agreement. Beyond that neither side was willing to. go. Negotiations will ho continued under the direction of the Department of Labour, which hopes to settle the strike before any shortage is felt. • . .
During the first day of the strike no disorders were reported.
