“MYSTERY RAY”

LOCATING DISTANT SHIPS

TESTS IN THE UNITED STATES

(United Press Association —Copyright) NEW YIRK, July 30. Tfie Army Signal Corps has perfected a “mystery ray” tests of which reveal its ability to- detect the exact position of a vessel up to 50 miles off shore even when it is anchored without its engines running. The tests were made in the highlands of New Jersey with the area so closely guarded that there is no information regarding the principle involved. A night test with a powerful searchlight substituted for artillery proved successful against a coastguard cutter operating five miles off shore. By the use of the new ray the position of the boat was so accurately determined that when the searchlight was aimed and turned on, it immediately spotted the craft. It is said that if a gun had been used instead of a light direct hits would have resulted.
