SUBMARINE SINKS
CREW OF FIFTY-FIVE DROWNED.
.NAVAL DISASTER FOR SOVIET.
COLLISION IN MANOEUVRES. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) MOSCOW, July 31. The entire crew of fifty-five was drowned when a Soviet submarine sank, following a collision during manoeuvres in the Gulf of Finland. The Soviet has issued a decree that £IOOO will be given to each of the victims’ families. The victims include seven naval cadets from Leningrad Military Academy. The remainder are Red fleet men. They will be given a State funeral when the vessel is raised. Submarine B 3 was taking part in the Soviet Baltic Fleet’s annual mar nouvres, and was actually submerged when it was struck by another vessel, and sank immediately.
Rescue work proved impossible. The disaster occurred last Thursday and has only just been revealed. 1
