BASKETBALL.

ASHBURTON V. CANTERBURY. TWO VICTORIES FOR VISITORS, Second and third grade representative teams from the Canterbury Basketball Association visited Ashburton on Saturday afternoon and met the Ashburton Association’s senior and junior teams. The ground was in good order, and two even matches were witnessed by a large number of spectators.

In the senior match, Canterbury won by" nine points to seven, and was also successful in the junior by eleven goals to five.

The goals attempted in both fixtures were very close. Canterbury shot nine goals from 32 attempts in the senior, and Ashburton obtained seven from 30 shots. In the junior, Canterbury goaled 11 from 38 shots, while from 23 attempts Ashburton ringed five goals.

At the close of the matches the visiting teams were entertained at afternoon tea, when they were accorded a welcome by Miss C. Tyndall (president of the Ashburton Basketball Association). Miss Tyndall spoke of Ashburton’s appreciation of the experience gained through playing the Canterbury teams. She wished the Canterbury senior team success at the New Zealand tournament. As manager of the Canterbury teams Miss E. Glubb replied. She thanked Miss Tyndall, for her good wishes and; Ashburton for the games provided. The Senior Match. The teams were:— Canterbury"—Forwards, D l . Gluestein, A. Templeton, E. Matthews; centres, C. Hawkins, I. Bell, K, Weir; defence, W. VV. Weenik, M. Fancy (captain), K. Palmer. Ashburton—Forwards, J. McMillan, R. Holland, M. Wallis; centres, R. ISpedding, E. Meredith, M. Brosnahan; defence, A. Wells, T. Stalker, I. McLennan (captain). Passing under the goal in the early stages by Canterbury threw away several chances before nice work by A. Templeton gave B. Gluestein a pretty goal. A smart intercept by M. Bros.ainm was gathered by M. Wallis and Canter bui'y being out of position, R. Holland goaled. B. (gluestein took a throw-in and goaled after some good passing. An attack started by A. Wells and carried on by EL Meredith, M. Wallis and J. McMillan gave R. Holland another goal. From a penalty J. McMillan scored and A. Templeton followed in with another for Canterbury, making the score three all. M. Wallis fielded nicely for J. McMillan to shoot another goal for Ashburton. Ragged work spoiled play for some time. A neat movement started by A. Wells and carried on by I. McLennan, M. Brosnahan and J. McMillan, was rounded off by R. Holland. Smart play by El. Matthews enabled B. Gluestein to goal, but she missed

two shots ' just on half-time, making the score 5-4 in favour of Ashburton.

Ashburton, attacked, but met sound defence. The centres were well matched. Canterbury" forwards were caught out of position, but Ashburton’s shot failed. R. Holland made no mistake with the next attempt from a similar movement. B. Gluestein fielded a long

throw-in by G. Hawkins, but missed the hoop. There were some spectacular passing movements on the part of both teams till B. Gluestein broke a ran. of missed goals. From one of many scrambles A. Templeton ringed a fine, long shot, making the score 6 all. M. Fancy cleared to I. Bell from an Ashburton attack and the movement was finished off by B. Gluestein, giving Canterbury the lead. An effective movement was witnessed in all thirds, resulting in a goal by E. Matthews. Ashburton missed three shots before M. Wallis brought the score to 8-7 in the visitors’ favour. The final goal came from a smart intercept by C. Hawkins, enabling B. Gluestein to score.

Canterbuiy 9, Ashburton 7. Mr S. G. Macfarlane was referee.

The Junior Match.

The teams were as follow:

Canterbuiy—Forwards, N. Mahoney, A. Edwards, G. Kinley; centres, E. Sherratt, It. O’Leary, G! Mullins (captain) • defence, M. Wilson, J. Bruce, E. Smart.

Ashburton—Forwards, M. Forsyth, M. McGee, EL Donaldson; centres, I. Stringer, H. Grice, M. Alexander; defence, J. Knight, T. Harper (captain), R. Andrew. Much better basketball was played in this match than in the senior game, with spectacular passing movements throughout. Although the shooting was weak on both sides, there was some bright field work, especially between N. Mahoney andl G. Kinley. Ashburton’s strength lay in their defence, J. Knight making some splendid saves. At first the game was slowed up considerably by much overstepping of the lines, but play soon settled down and Canterbury opened the scoring. The centres were evenly matched, Ashburton having an advantage in height and Canterbury being qnicker to get the ball away. P. O’Leary was outstanding for Canterbury, her. constructive attacking movements giving the forwards many opportunities. At one stage Ashburton were leading by 3 to 1, but after many unsuccessful attempts to score Canterbury gradually added goals. The second half was ragged. There was much fumbling and wild passing. Ashburton opened well, but Canterbury drew ahead before half-time when the score was 0' to 3 in their favour. The visitors had the better of the game in the second half, when they made five\ more goals to two by Ashburton. For Canterbuiy, N. Mahoney shot six goals, A. Edwards obtained three and G. Kinley shot one, while the remaining goal was shot from a penalty. Goals were shot for Ashburton by M. McGee (3) and M. Forsyth (2). Mr F. W. Lovett was referee.
