SPECIAL WOMEN’S MATCH.
TEAM FOR DOMINION TOURNEY. To assist in the selection of the representative team to compete at the New Zealand women's hocKey tournament at Lis borne, the Ashburton Association arranged a match between Hinds seniors and a combined team in the Domain on Saturday afternoon. At a special meeting of tne executive alter the match, it was definitely decided to send a team to tins tourney in preference to undertaking a tour in tiie south as proposed. Hinds, which has Had an unbeaten record for two seasons, defeated the combined team by seven goals to two and the match provided a good display of hockey. As was to be expected, Hinds fiad better combination, but the combined team fought well. J. Davison (5) and E. Musson (2) were the scorers for the winning side andt M. Carson and T. Morgan shot goals for the combined team. All of the Hinds forward line performed well, and M. Watson and I. Morris were very safe on defence. T. Morgan and B. Brand were outstanding among the combined forwards, and the three halves, D. Fowke, E. Jaiy and N. Tatterson, were seen in some pleasing work:, N, Ayers was the best of the backs, Messrs A. G. McHardy and S. M. Johnston were the referees.
As a curtain-raiser, Tinwald (scr) defeated Lowcliffe (handicap 3 goals) by seven goals to four’, in a senior competition fixture. F. ,Gudsell (3), M. Henderson (3) and. N. Loach shot goals for Tinwald, and B. Anderson obtained Lowcliffe’s score. Tinwald was the heavier and more experienced team, but the young Lowcliffe players gave a good display. E. Anderson, in Lowcliffe’s forward line, deserves special mention. Messrs W. B. Thomas and W. T. Corbett were the referees. MEN’S COMPETITION MATCHES. Two matches . were played in the senior grade of the Mi d-Canterbury Men’s Hockey Sub-Association’s competitions on Saturday. Baring Square beat St. Andrew’s by 3 goals to 0, playing on the Ashburton Domain. Neither team had its full complement, but an even game resulted. W. Corbett shot three goals for Baring Square. Messrs S. W. Gower and S. Watson were the referees.
The rough state of the ground did not make for good play at Wakanui, where Ashburton beat Wakanui by 6 goals to 3. For Ashburton, Pearce shot foui* goals and Ford and Willis one each, and Mcllraith shot two and Page one for Wakanui. Mr E, M. Gabites was the referee.
