TOWN v. COUNTRY MATCH.

FIXTURES IN ASHBURTON

With the Ashburton Rugby Union’s senior representative team on tour, senior competition matches were not played on Saturday, and a Town v. Country match was staged at the Showgrounds, where there was a fair attendance of the public. The country side won by 16 points to 10. Lower grade fixtures were also staged at the Showgrounds and at other centres throughout the County.

The Town team dominated the play in the first half and their forwards were' on the point of scoring on several occasions, but the movements broke down through lack of combination. Both sets of backs initiated promising movements which lacked finish and suffered through bad passing. The first score was made by B. Newton, who completed a run through commenced by lveeley from tfie twenty-live. Keeley converted. Town 5, Country 0. Country equalised the score a few minutes later when McAlister got possession and the bail went to O’Connor, Palmer and Liliey, who made a good dash over the last 20 yards to obtain a try behind the posts. Taylor converted. Town 5, Country 5. The Town forwards were working well in unison, with Stephens and Alexander doing a great deal of the leading. They broke away in a loose rush and Alexander kicked the bail over the line and fell on it for a try. Keeley again converted. Town 10, Country 5. . Town took the offensive again from the whistle and went near to crossing Country’s line. Country had to defend stoutly for some minutes, but the pressure was relieved. Play immediately swung down to the other end of the field, where several players handled within the twenty-five for Brown to add to the Country score. Taylor’s conversion kick did not rise. __ Town 10, Country 8. The Town forwards were responsible for launching anothei attack, but the bah was fumbled and went out. Up and down play of a poor standard was seen for some time. Town players went d° wn well to a Country thrust, but mishandling saw nothing come of the effort. All the Country* backs handled for Liliey to make a run for the line. Four defenders endeavoured to tackle. him, but he had no trouble in getting through to the line. Taylor’s kick converted. Country 13, Town 10. The Town backs collapsed and put up very little opposition to the Country attacks. The Country rear- division threw the ball about in the Town twenty-five, and Lawler got across in l the corner. Taylor did not put his kick over. Country! 16, Town 10. Mr J. Lewis was referee.

JUNIOR GRADE.

Playing at Mayfield 1 , the Springburn team drew with the home team, each side scoring one unconverted try. For Mayfield, J. Edmond was the scorer, and for Springburn the scorer was A. Fagan. Mr A. H. Guiney was referee. Rakaia defeated Hinds at Hinds by six points to nil. The points came from two penalty kicks. Mr C. H. Miller was referee.

A win by six points to three was registered by Old Boys against Methven A, at Ashburton. For Old Boys, H. Milsom scored a try and D. White kicked a penalty. G. Lochhead kicked a penalty for Methven. Mr C. Wellman was referee. At Methven, Technical Old Boys defeated Methven B by nine points to three. M. Wallace obtained a try for Methven and the town team’s points came from a converted try and a field goal, the latter being kicked by E. Samuels. Mr J. MacMillan was the referee.

SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN.

NORTH OTAGO WINS ON TIME. OAMARU, July 27. The annual match between South Canterbury and North Otago was played at the Oamaru Showgrounds today, in fine but dull weather, and resulted in a last-minute victory for North Otago by 16 points to 14. The score at half-time was 6-5 in favour of South Canterbury, and in the second spell the visitors went to a lead, of 14-5. However, North Otago rallied:, and made up leeway well. With only about two minutes to go, the home side obtained a try to bring the scores even, and all depended on the kick at goal, which was successful.

TARANAKI BEATS AUCKLAND.

NEW PLYMOUTH, July 27.

Taranaki defeated Auckland in a representative Rugby match by 31 to 29. It was a remarkable match. The first half was mediocre, with little enterprise or skill in play. Auckland led 11-8 at half-time, but the second half was brilliant and full of skilful scoring movements. Taranaki at one stage led by 31 to 14.

IN OTHER CENTRES. Christchurch—Old Boys 11, University 6; Christchurch 14, Sunny side 13; Sydenham 18, Athletic 5; Lin wood 1/, Merivale 6. Wellington—Marist 6, Athletic b; Petone 17, Jolinsonville 6; Wellington 16, Eastbourne 13; Hutt 9, Poneke 3; Old Boys 17, Oriental 6. Dunedin By defeating University A by 3 points (a. penalty goal) to 0, Southern won this season’s premieisliip. Other matches resulted: Pirates 9, Dunedin 3; Zingari 12, University B 0; Union 6, Alhambra 6; Taien IJ, Kaikorai 5.

CANTERBURY BEATS WELLINGTON.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 27

The Canterburv representatives beat Wellington by 3*goals to 2 at Association football to-day. A cold southerly wind, showers of rain, a greasy* ball and a wet ground make conditions difficult, but the game was fast and hard.
