BOXING.
PORTNEY DEFEATS BROWN. SYDNEY, April 29. At the Stadium to-night the Canadian, Jack Portney (lOst slb), defeated the American, Willard Brown (lOstolb), on a technical kncck-out in the sixth round. It was a one-sided encounter. Brown was down thrice in the first round and had one eye badly gashed.
THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the general committee of the Ashburton Boxing Association was held last evening, Mr W. R. Tucker presiding. Mr J. Connolly, M.P., forwarded a donation and accepted the office of vicepresident.
The Rakaia Boxing Association advised that it was holding a tournament oh May 21, and forwarded two complimentary tickets. The match committee reported! that it met last Wednesday, and suggested holding match contests on Thursday, May 2. As the time is rather limited "in. order to complete arrangements, ft was decided to postpone the opening night until May 9, when a good programme of events will be arranged. Twelve new members were elected, and final arrangements for the opening night were left to the match committee.
