FRENCH CHAMPIONS AT HASTINGS. HASTINGS, March 8. The third public appearance in New Zealand of the French champions, Jean Taris and Emile iPoussard, occasioned a record attendance at the swimming carnival at Hastings this evening. Again Taris beat Rridson's New Zealand quarter-mile record, his time in fresh cold water being smin 4 2-ssec, the existing record being beaten by lOsec. Taris beat his Hamilton time by 11 3-ssec, only 5 1-5 sec slower than his sensational effort at Auckland. In the 220 yards Taris beat Crump's New Zealand record by 1 3-ssec, doing the distance in 2min 21sec. In both events Watkins .(Hastings), New Zealand mile champion, and Lindsay (Dannevirke), New Zealand mile and half-mile records holder, were easily beaten by the Frenchman. The Hastings man shaded Lindsay in each event, doing the 440 yards in smin 27sec to lower the Hawke's Bay provincial record by 12sec. Poussard provided a magnificent 15 minutes of exhibition diving.
