GOLF.

NO PROFESSIONALS. The Ladies' Golf Union's (England) rejection of the proposed deletion of the word "amateur" from the conditions in the events controlled by the union leaves the golfing position unchanged. Thus events controlled by the Ladies' Golf Union will be open only to amateurs. Thei union has approached Australasian bodies, who do not favour the change. The English section, which wished to delete the word "amateur,'' considered the women, who had technically infringed amateurism, were unduly penalised because, unlike men, they were barred from championship play, as there were not sufficient professionals to allow professional championships. The Golf Union secretary told a Press representative that because a person forfeited the amateur status he did not necessarily! become a professional. Nevertheless, when it was realised that the deletion of the word "amateur" would allow real professionals to compete, the majority decided it was not worth the risk, so players like Miss Enid Wilson, who, through writing newspaper articles, had technically infringed the rule, would continue to be barred. The union rejected the Surrey Association's motion for the deletion of the word by 272 votes to 182.
