ATHLETES FOR MELBOURNE. <Per Plress Association). AUCKLAND, August 10. Returning from a tour of the Orient, where he has been selecting athletes to compete in the Melbourne centenary celebrations, Mr Norman E. Brookes, of Melbourne, president of the Australian Lawn Tennis Association, and former tennis champion, arrived at Auckland on the Monterey. Mr Brookes is a member of the executive of the Centenary Council and chairman of | the special sub-committee which is | handling the comprehensive sports and garner programme to be held during the celebrations, in which noted athletes from all oyer the world will take .part. Among 50 to" 60. athletes selected by Mr Brookes are the . three champion swimmers of Japan. The Japanese championships will be held this month, and the three champions will go to Melbourne for the great swimming carnival that has been planned. Mr Brookes has also arranged for a polo team, composed of wealthy Spanish settlers in Manila, to go to Melbourne, as well as star athletes of ,'yarious Oriental countries.
