THICK DRIZZLE SETS IN. 26 POINTS UP' TO 9 A.M. Damp, misty conditions in Ashburton last evening indicated rain, and a thick drizzle ;set in about 1 a.m., continuing all day. It lifted a little at times, but came down just as heavy again afterwards. A cold south-west wind blew. Up to 9 o’clock this morning 26 points •had been recorded at the Domain weather station. This is the heaviest fall in cue period since May 16, when points were recorded. The barometer remains steady. , At 9 a.m. the reading was 29.73 inches, compared with 29.77 inches yesterday morning. Extremes of shade temperature yesterday and last night, were 56.3 degrees and 44.2 degrees. TO-DAY'S FORECAST. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government _ at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather General inference: The depression mentioned yesterday is moving very slowly over the Dominion, and has deepened since last night. By to-mor-row it should be passing eastward. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: —

Moderate south-easterly or southerly winds predominating, and gradually freshening somewhat. Weather dull and misty, with further rain. Some heavy falls are likely, and snow on ranges, conditions improving gradually to-morrow. Seas will b© moderate, hut later increasing.
