FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the “Guardian,” June, 2, 1884). Roman Catholic Bazaar.—This muchtalked of bazaar was opened on Saturday morning by Mr J. Ivess, M.H.R., in the presence of several persons. The Town Hall had a very pleasing effect fancy and useful goods in large quantities being nicely arranged on the several stalls and in various parts of the building, attended by ladies of various denominations, amongst whom were noticed Mesdames Adams, Brankin, Dally, . Fitzgerald, McTigue, Mahoney, and Misses Butler (2), Cullen, Healy, McFarlane, Shury and Welsh. In performing the opening ceremony, Mr Ivess expressed the pleasure it gave him to open) the bazaar. Before dismissing the company, Captain, Douglas announced that a church parade would take place next Sunday. Ashburton _ Election.—We understand that Sir Julius Vogel has, in response to an influential requisition, replied that he will consent to be nominated for the Ashburton seat. ‘ '

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 2,1909). Subdivision of Lagmhor Estate.— Plans have been issued for the subdivision of part of the Lagmhor estate, consisting of 1100 acres, which Messrs Spiers and Wilson, land agents, Christchurch. have for sale privately. The block is at present subdivided into seven lots, but the agents will sell it in lots to suit purchasers. Willowby Mutual Improvement Society.—A meeting of the Willowby Mutual Improvement Society was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening, when there was a large attendance. It was a question-box evening. Miss I. Chapman sang a solo, and Mr T. Chapman and Mr W. A. Lill gave recitations. After some it was decided to change the name from a Mutual Improvement Society to a Literary and Debating Society, The subject of the next meeting is to be a debate on “Town v.
