MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED LEG BROKEN IN COLLISION A severely broken right leg was sustained by Mr James Lemon Landers Wellman, a married man residing at the corner of Cass and Cox Streets, when he was struck by a motor-car at the corner of East and Moore Streets, shortly before 10 o'clock this morning. Mr Wellman was riding a motorcvcle in a northerly direction along East Street, when a motor-car driven by Mr George Brand came out of Moore Street. The car struck Mr Wellman's right leg and threw him to the ground. Mr Wellman was taken to the Public Hospital in the ambulance, and he was reported this afternoon to be making good progress. DETECTIVE'S TRAGIC END. OHRISTCHUROH, This Day. Detective-Sergeant Edward F. O'Brien died in tragic circumstances this morning. Detective O'Brien,.who suffered a nervous collapse recently, had been on leave since Tuesday. He was found dead this morning in the bathroom of his home with a wound in. his throat. Detective O'Brien joined the Force in 1911. He served with the Rifle Brigade in Egypt and France, and subsequently rejoined the Force in Auckland. He became a detective in 1922 and was transferred to Christchurch in 1927. In recent weeks he had been pursuing investigations into the shooting case at the Addington Railway Station.
