NAZI DESPOTISM

POLICY OF OPPRESSION. PERMANENTLY ANTI-JEWISH. ATTESTATION OF BUSINESSES. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 8.55 a.m.) . LONDON, April 5. The Berlin correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" says that though the boycott of the Jews is not being resumed "as it has produced the desired effect abroad," a "statement by the chairman of the Central Boycott Committee shows that it is to be made permanent in another form. All nonJewish businesses are to be visibly attested by large plates, which, apparently, will be issued by the Government or the Nazi Party. Expulsion of" the Jewish Judges will be permanent. : TWO ENGLISHMEN ARRESTED. ACCUSATION BY WASHERWOMAN. LONDON, April 4. The arrest in Berlin of two Englishmen, Messrs Catchpool and Eraser, was the subject of a question in the House of Commons to-day, to which* the Under-Secretary, for Foreign Affairs (Captain Anthony Eden) replied. Captain Eden said he had been informed that both men had been detained in the Polizie Praesidium in the Aleander Platz. In the case of Mr Catchpool, the British Ambassador (Sir Horace Rumbold) already was in communication with the German authorities with a view to ascertaining the nature of the charge against him. In the meantime permission has been asked for the British Consul to visit him. Inquiries were being made in Mr Eraser's case. It was understood that the arrest of Mr Catchpool was due to the action of his washerwoman, who jumped at the conclusion that bundles of leaflets and pamphlets in English must be seditious, although she could not read fchem. Nazis found' copies of his reports to England on the situation in Germany, but the contents had never been disclosed outside Quaker circles. Mr Eraser .was arrested not by the police, but by Hitler Storm Troops. Mr. Catchpool has been released, as he is no£ suspected of trying to evade trial nor of hiding evidence.—British. Official Wireless. SHOOTING OF AN ENGLISHMAN. ' VICTIM'S POLITICAL HISTORY. VIENNA, April 5. The German Nazis who crossed the Austrian frontier and raided the Durcholzen Hotel, where they shot Dr. George Bell, also severely wounded a friend of Dr. Bell. " :, Bell was the-chief witness -for a Munich newsnaper which"' the Brown House (Nazi headquarters)' sued for libel in 1932. Bell was acquitted of forging Russian currency notes in 1930.
