FIREBLIGHT MENACE.
DISCOVERY AT MASTERTON. MASTERTON, Allgust 1. In the course of a brief visit to Masterton on Friday, Mr J. W. Whelan, orchard instructor of the Department of Agriculture, visited some orchards and came across cankers of fireblight on pip-fruit trees. Any one of these cankers if neglected until the spring would be enough to infect the whole district. All orchardists or owners of even one or two fruit trees should interest themselves in this matter and ascertain definitely whether there is any infection on their trees. If there is,, it must be cut out well below the stricken part and burnt immediately due precautions being taken to prevent any contact with healthy growth. Owners who fail to clear their properties in this way are liable to prosecution and fine, and it is expected that inspectors will shortly be employed to make a round of the district to ensure that all. possible precautions are taken and to enforce them if necessary. It is imperatively urgent that all diseased growth should he cut out within the next few w r eeks.
