ILLEGAL LOTTERY
SWEEP RUN BY BARMAN. j RESULT OF FOOTBALL MATCH. (Special to the “Guardian ”) AUCKLAND.. August 2. “We wish to show the public that such lotteries are illegal, and that the licensees of hotels must prevent them,” said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court, when Arthur Wellesley Austin, barman, was charged with establishing a lottery. Sergeant Kelly said two constables visited the hotel, and saw defendant walking among the customers and writing names in a book. He was running a sweep on the result of the Marist-Ponsonby League match at Carlaw' Park, and' each contributor paid Is. A sergeant later visited the hotel and recovered the book, which had a record of 36 names. The sum of 36s jwas found in a mug. The licensee was not aware the sweep was in progress. Counsel said the offence was parallel to that known as “selling a horse.” Racehorses w r ere not even suggested in this case, however, and it was not a very heinous offence. “Let this .be a warning,” said the Magistrate, in fining the accused £l.
