DISABLED STEAMER.
TiROA TOWED TO CISBORNE.

Information received, this morning indicates that the steamer Pukeko, with the disabled Tiroa in tox, is expected to reach here about noon, the ships having passed Tolaga Bay at 7 a.m. On completion of the discharge of her Auckland cargo, the- Tiroa will go on the slip here for the fitting of a new tailshaft, later resuming her usual I time-table. A BROKEN TAIL-SHAFT. GTSBORNE, April 16. Advice was received at Gisborne this morning that the small coastal steamer Tiroa, owned by the Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Company, was in v distress in the Bay of Plenty, having broken her tail-shaft. The vessel is being towed to Gisborne bv the Richardson steamer Pukeko. Tis mishap occurred on Tuesday afternoon, and five members of the crew put off in the ship's surf-boat for assistance, eventually landing on White Island. The Tiroa is not equipped with wireless, but a short-wave station is operated on the island, by the engineer in charge, Mr Kennedy, and it is believed that the station sent out an advice of the steamer's plight. A message was received by the Pukeko and at 8 a.nfc to-day she picked up the Tiroa 14 miles north of White Island, and took her in tow.
This mishap is the ssecond of the kind recently to vessels owned by the Gisborne Bheppfarmers' Company, The motor-ship Margaret W., broke her tail-shaft recently. The Tiroa was bound for coastal bays and Gisborne with Auckland cargo. She is a steamer of 20G tons net, commanded by Captain R. Owen. ,
