SIR GEORGE CLIFFORD.

Sir George' Clifford is dead, aged 83.

Sir George Clifford's illness lasted more than two years. • He was fully conscious toward the end, and passed away peacefully.

Sir George Hugh Charles Clifford was born in 1847. He was educated at Stonyhurst College (Lancashire), and in 1870 was admitted as a barrister. He then took up farming pursuits on Stonyhurst station, Amberley, originally taken up by Sir Charles Clifford (his father) and Sir Frederick Weld. He succeeded to the title in 18';3, six years after his father was created a baronet. Sir George was chairman or director of several companies in New Zealand, his most important position in the business world being that of chairman of directors of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. But it was as a sportsman that Sir George was known throughout the Dominion. Besides owning many successful racehorses, he took a prominent part in the control of the sport, being tor many years president of the New Zealand Racing Conference. In that capacity he did much to ensure the purity of racing. Sir George Clifford was married three times, and he had one son and three daughters, his heir being Mr Charles Lewis Clifford, who was born in July, 1885.
