SELLING LIQUOR.

RISKS IN AMERICA. “SPEAKEASY” OWNERS’ VIEWS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, March 30. The result of the poll taken among “speakeasy” operators has been published in the “New York Herald,” which showed them to be overwhelmingly in favour of modification or repeal of the Prohibition laws. The principal reason offered was the problem faced by operators of graft expenditure, exploitation bv the authorities and extortion by the police and Federal agents.

The next important hazards were: (1) The possibility of official raids. (2) The fear of hold-ups by gunmen who knew that their victims could not complain to the police. (3) The fear of “padlock” proceedings. (-1) Higher rentals. (5) Non-paying customers, such as the police. ■' (6) The social, stigma placed upon the “speakeasy” owner 1 and liis family. (7) Loss of liigh-class patronage due to home delivery.

The Opinion virtually of all those questioned seemed to be expressed by the operator, who said; “Sure; I’m for repeal. My last payment to the police will take me two months to make up.”
