The games were played in ideal weather on the Wellington Association s courts at Miramar. Tlie best game of the day was BartJeet’s great fight against jßorotra. Bartleet frequently beat Borotra with, fine passing shots. Borotra was somewhat below form, missing half volleysand netting volleys and outing crossback drives on the side line. Bartleet;. was driving hard to keep BoVotra back from the net. He succeeded sometimes, but as the game developed, Borotra gained ascendancy at the net, from where the final decision lay. Bartleet played much better than against Ollivier in Christchurch. Borotra was foot-faulting badly, but was not pulled, up He was a bundle of energy, and. bounced about like an indiarubber ball. He hit ground strokes hard &nd deep, but not always accurately. . Brugnon had no trouble with Oflivier who played without life. Brugnon was very quick on his feet. He volleyed and smashed to perfection, and often made Ollivier look foolish. Both served several double faults. The fitter of the two, Brugnon has a severe drive, and is dangerous at the net. Ollivier fought well only in patches. Boussus is definitely in a class above Malfrov, who could not deal, with tn€u French boy’s severe drives and wonderful smashing. Boussus made very .few 1 mistakes, and volleyed from the net to leave Malfrov standing. Boussus hit Malfroy’s service as it has not been hit before, and he got the corners with great placing and control. relied on steadiness, and passing shots, but Boussus anticipated too well, and \yas too quick to steady himself. Detailed results:— Jean Borotra- (France) beat E. E. Bartleet (New Zealand). ~ Jacques Brugnon (France) beat «* Ollivier (New Zealand), 6-1, 3-6, b-4, 6. „ ' Christian Boussus (France) beat C.
