FALSE PRETENCES I
OFFENCES IN WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 10. For swindling a woman out of £33 after inducing her to accept an engagement as his housekeeper, and for obtaining money by false pretences from a man by pretending to be a lelative of his son-in-law, Thomas James Campbell, a labourer, aged 48, was sent to gaol to-day. Campbell pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to the offences with which he was charged. The story was that he went to a registry, office in Palmerston North, representing that he was a well-to-do farmer at Tailiape, and wished to engage a housekeeper. He engaged a woman named Blanche Cook, and obtained £33 from her by explaining that he was temporarily embarrassed and wanited to truck some stock to the farm. He sent the woman to Taihape, where she found she had been hoaxed Accused also admitted obtaining £5 by a valueless cheque, and £3 in cash from Charles Simpson, by representing that h 6 was a relative of Simpson's son-in-law. Accused previously served of imprisonment for false pretences, forgery, and theft. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, ' concurrently on tue two minor charges, and on the third charge he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence witnin three years if called upon, a condition being that he repays- £33 at £1 a week atfer his discharge^
