WITH ROD AND GUN.
ASHBURTON SOCIETY. The committee of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society met last evening, those present being Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman)., E, B. Newton, G. Hefford and A. O. Pilbrow. The New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies Association wrote asking for information regarding the deer herds under the control of the Ashburton Society as it was required for assistance in the control of deer herds throughout New Zealand. 'lt was decided to forward the required particulars. A letter from the Department of Internal Affairs stated that the Society's request for an open season for deerstalking was under consideration. A report from Mr James Muir gave details of the culling operations carried out in the RaEaia Gorge last spring and suggested various methods of improving the herd. It was agreed that Mr Muir should be thanked for his Information. Seven applications for stalking blocks in the Society's district were "held over until the Department of Internal Affairs announces its decision in regard to the request for an open season. As in the past it was decided to make arrangements to receive regular reports of the condition of the rivers during the quinnat salmon fishing season. Members of the committee referred to the bad condition of the road to the Rakaia huts, and it was decided to write to the Rakaia Road Board drawing its attention to the matter.
