LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. j (From "Guardian/' Dec. 31, 1901). ; The Old Men's Home.—The contraci tor for the Old Men's Home is making izpod progress with the erection of the ! building. The brick walls are nearly all up and a large part of the building is roofed. When completed the Home will not only be a substantial structure, but should prove a comfortable abode for the aged inmates. Fraposed Dairy Factory.—A movement is now on foot foa - the establishment of a dairy factory in the Ashburton district. It is proposed to form a company to supply Ashburton suburbs with pasteurised milk, and, in the event of sufficient milk being offered by the farmers, to also enter into the manufacturing of butter. Large tracts of land in the Longbeach, Hinds, and Flemington districts are well adapted for grazing purposes and there can be little doubt that if a company is formed with sufficient capital, and placed under the management of a competent man, it should do well, not only for itself but for the community. Flag Hoisting at Eiffeltom.—The hoisting of the school flag took place at Eiffelton on Monday in the presence of a large number of schoolchildren, parents and friends. Amongst those attending were Mr John McLachlan, M.H.R., Mr and Mrs J. C. N. Grigg and Mr and Mrs Coward. The hoTstmg of the flag was performed by Mrs Grigg, after which brief addresses were given by the chairman of the School Conunittee (Mr H. Cullem) and Mr J. McLachlan. The function was brought, to a close by an enjoyable afternoon tea and musical programme. Officers of the Eighth Contingent.— Leiutenant Alfred A. Fooks, of the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, . has been appointed Acting-Captain in the Eighth Contingent.
