TENNIS TOURNEY.

THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDED. OLLIVIEB WINS MEN'S SINGLES. The various sections of the MidCanterbury 'Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion's Tournament were advanced a further stage yesterday afternoon, when the remaining finals in the Championship section were played, and many of the Handicap section advanced to the semi-final stage. Games played after the "Guardian" went to press are as follow: CHAMPIONSHIPS. Men's Singles. Semi-final.—Ollivier won from Allison by default. Final.—Ollivier beat Walker 6-3, 6-0. The first game, a love game, was won by Walker on his service, Ollivier fumbling. In the second game Ollivier's • two first services were successful, and he won easily. Walker played to Olliyier's back hand in the third, but Ollivier proved too strong, winning the game. Walker came to the net in the fifth game, and played several good smashing shots, winning the game 40-15. Ollivier won the next, leading 4-2. The next game went to deuce, and was won by Ollivier. The eighth game was won by Walker, who placed some splendid back hand drives, and again played well at the net. In the ninth game Walker double faulted and misjudged badly on two occasions, losing to Ollivier, who won the first *et 6-3. In the second set Walker opened by coming to the net, and out-placed Ollivier, the first game went to deuce, but Ollivier won with fine back hand play. Early .in' the second game Ollivier returned Walker's service with a back hand drive that Walker could not reach. Walker again, double faulted and mis-hit, losing the game. Ollivier won the next two, playing strongly to Walker's back hand. Walker's play lacked the dash he disployed earlier in the tournament, and he seemed disinclined to chase OUivier's well-placed shots, and the set was won by Ollivier 6-0, giving him the match. Combined Doubles. Semi-finals—Walker and Miss Andrew beat Bonnington and Miss Guy 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; Angus and Miss Wood beat Fisher and Mrs Fisher 6-2, 6-1. - Final.—Angus and Miss Wood beat .Walker and Miss Andrew 6-5, 6-4. In spite of their strenuous day Walker and his partner opened the set by winning the first two games in fine style, both playing exceptionally good tennis. The eighth game ended with Walker still leading 5-3. Angus and his partner then improved, especially in services, and his partner supported him well on the back line. At the tenth game the scores were 5 all, Angus winning the eleventh and the first set 6-5.

In the second set the play was more «qual and the cud of the fourth game found the scores 2 all. In the fifth game Walker played some good drives to the back line, and his partner backed him up well at the net. Angus attempted some smashing shots unsuccessfully, and the game was Walker's. Some brilliant,play was witnessed in the next game, Walker delivering some overhead smashes with deadly effect. Angus plaved a brilliant net game, and won leading 4-3. In the tenth game Miss Andrew sent two splendid sideline drives to Angus, who missed badly, but Angus won the game and the final 6-5, 6-4.

"A" GRADE HANDICAPS. Ladies' Singles. Second round—Miss Vesty (owe 15 4-6) beat Miss Cowan (owe 4-6) 9-7; Miss Stewart (owe 30 2-6) beat Miss Dixon (owe 3-6) 9-6. Third round—Miss Campbell (owe 15 2-6) beat Miss M. Vesty (owe 3-6) 9-4; Miss Percy (owe 4-6) beat Miss McClurg (owe 4-6) 9-5. Men's Singles. Second round —Mackie won from Rofoilliard by default; H. A. Barnett '(owe 4-6) iron from Clarke (owe 15 1-6) 9-1; Christie (scr) beat Vesty (owe 15 3-6) 9-4. Third round.—Dart (owe 4-6) beat Mackie (owe 15 3-6) 9-7; Barnett (owe 4-6) beat Cuff (owe 30) 9-5. Ladies' Doubles.
