INCREASE IN EXPENDITURE. UNAVOIDABLE NEW LIABILITIES ((Special io the '"Guardian.") WELLINGTON, July 24. The following are the, Estimates tor the year 1925-6 : Consolidated Fund— Ordinary Revenue Account-- £ Revenue S'SMS Expenditure 29,024,616 Available' for supplementary estimates and taxation reductions and concessions, etc £070,d84 Customs -.-. - 7 800,000 Stamp and death duties ... jM4O,»UO Postal, and Telegraph ... 3,046,000 Land-tax 1,250,00 U Income-tax '.'. f'ffn'SSS Railways 7,700,000 Interest on public moneys 1,190,000 London Loan, 1925-6, for Public Works and State advances 7,000,000
It is proposed to' transfer, to tlie 'Public Works Fund up to £1,000.000. The estimated revenue is £9S7,UUU above the actual receipts of last year. The estimated expenditure is £758,145 above the amount appropriated last year. Of this increase, approximately £580,000 is directly accounted for by anticipated and unavoidable new liabilities of a national character, such as £150,000, disabled soldiers' treatment, war graves, etc., representing the remaining liabilities 'of the War Expenses Account now closed; £160,000. naval defence, second cruiser; £IBO.OOO, interest; and £9O 000, general election. The balance of the increase, £178.000 (says the Minister), is not above the amount due Ito normal annual expansion for education, scale increases in salaries, and 'other services; and the estimatesjnust be regarded as still reflecting the Government's policy of economy and saving in pubJift expenditure.
