LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From “Guardian,” July 24, 1898)

Alarm of Fire.—At about 8 o’clock last evening the fire bell rang out an alarm. The whole staff of the Fire Brigade turned out and made for the Central Hotel, where the seat of the lire was, but little effort on the part of the Brigade was required, seeing that numerous friends had been ready with water buckets to do what was necessary. The fire was actually in the garret, but it had originated in the servant’s bedroom, arising, it is supposed, from a candle having been left burning. The fire, such as it was, was soon extinguished, but the girls interested have lost all their clothes.

Coursing—The stewards of the Ashburton Coursing Club met last evening to make final arrangements for the Champion Stakes, to be run on Thursday at Longbeach. Mr M Digby wrote accepting the position of judge, and Mr M. Healy as slipper. The election of field stewards was left over, a selection to be made on the ground. A start will be made from the Tinwald Hotel at 8 o’clock, and the first pair of dogs will be in the slips at 9 a.m. Property Sale.—Mr T. Bullock sold by auction at the Arcade to-day Mr R. B. Luscombe’s freehold farm of 62| acres at Eiffelton, being lots 1 and 2, and part lots 5 and 6, original Longbeach sale plan, at £23 10s per acre, Mr Wm, Lidstone being the purchaser ; also his leasehold at Hinds, 28 acres part reserve 1110, having about 10 years to run, for £260, to Mr Henry Frampton.
