ENTERTAINMENTS

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.

“ FAST MAIL”—A TOIINADb. Eileen Percy and Charles Jones are the stars in the great melodrama to be shown at His Majesty’s Theatre tonight and to-morrow night. The Fast Mail” operates on the general lines of a Kansas tornado. Nothing is impossible in it. It sweeps everything before it, lays barren everything over which it passes, travels at the speed its name would imply, and, after all is said and done, is of value to everybody. It is meller melodramatic, with the great central scene a terrifying race, automobile against train, with the hero on board the fast mail, the villain in the machine, each of the two men bent upon reaching Vicksburg first, and, once there, battling for deal’ life over the prostrated body of the girl. This photoplay is said to be about the liveliest thing in films to have been presented in Ashburton ' for months, and its lightning-like camera “shots” of racing trains, dashing fire horses, fist fights, shootings, footraces, and horseback riding are interesting to see, because they show, at least, that the camera men are progressing. “The public of to-day love thrills just as the audiences of a generation ago liked my melodramas,” says Mr Carter. “After all, society and crook plays of to-day are simply the old melodramas repolished and re-written. Most people love thrills, and now that my melodramas are to be done upon the screen I am going to help see that they are presented right. Furthermore, I think the screen would take a great step forward if it would concentrate more on good, healthy melodramas and thrillers rather than upon the sex problems that have been overdone so much in the movies lately.”
