An inquest touching the- death, of M John McKay, 82 years of age, who r died in the hospital early yesterday j morning from injuries received by be- j 1 ing knocked down by a train at the 1 Antigua Street Crossing at 10.30 a.m. - on Saturday was opened before tho District Coroner, Mi* H. Y. Widdowson, yesterday afternoon. Mary Elizabeth Rudd, married, residing at 84, Crescent Road, Spre-y----don, said deceased was her uncle. Deceased was single. At one time he followed the occupation of shepherd,, but. for some years ho had dono no work. The inquest was adjourned until. 3.15p.m. on Wednesday. i ' SUDDEN DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Mi*s Sarah Ann Cusworth, 69, residing at 3, Thames. Street, St. Albans,, died suddenly about 6.30 yesterday morning. She had been in ill-health for about eight years. Dr. Whetter, who- attended deceased about two years ago, is prepared to certify that, death was due to heart failure and an inquest may not be necessary. KNOCKED DOWN BY CYCLE. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Mrs Johnston, residing at 16, Hewitt’s Road, Merivale, was admitted to the hospital yesterday suffering from injuries to her head received through being knocked down- on Papanui Road by a bicycle. She was semi-con-scious when admitted, and there was no change in her condition late last evening. TENNIS PLAYER INJURED. ‘ CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. F , A mail named F. Parris, of 108, [ Leinster Road, was admitted to- the , hospital yesterday through an injury sustained while playing tennis. He was found to have fractured’ his right leg ’ just above the ankle.

AUCKLAND, April 1

William Ernest Brunswick Brown, aged 32, Hvas drowned yesterday at Castor Bay through the swamping of a dinghy. His six-year-old son and deceased’s brother were rescued. Deceased was a draper’s assistant at Te Kuiti. He leaves a wife and two children.

MOTOR-CYCLE ACCIDENT.

AUCKLAND, April 1

L. Banks was injured about 10 amon Saturday when he was riding a mo-tor-cycle, with side-chair attached, on the Styx Road. The machine struck a stump and was overturned. Mr Banks, who suffered injuries to one arm ancf to his chest, was taken to the General Hospital. SIJDDEN DEATH. CHEVIOT, March 31. Herbert Orampton, , aged 35, a returned soldier with three years’ service, died suddenly while digging potatoes on the farm of Mr T. Lewis, his father-in-law, with whom he resided.

Dr. Saunders states that when he attended Crumpton three months ago he suffered from a weak heart. He was a widower with one son.

RAILWAY FATALITY.

HAMILTON, March 31

Albert Francis Cross, a. resident of Hastings, was killed by a railway train at Frankton this morning. Cross, accompanied by his wife and daughter, was a passenger by the Main Trunk to Auckland. Ho came out on the platform of a car, the gate of which was open, and, over-balancing, fell between the carriages, being terriby mutilated.

DROWNED IN RAKAIA RIVER. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. In attempting to cross the Rakaia River in a gig yesterday morning a man named Frederick George Howatson lost his life. Howatson, accompanied by a man named Neal Munro, was driving in a horse and gig from Rakaia Island towards Southbridge, and at 10.45 a.m. entered the stream which was in high flood consequent upon the previous day’s strong nor’wester. They reached mid-stream when the gig was swamped and the' occupants were participated into the toiTont. Munro succeeded in swimming to the bank, but Howatson was washed away, and it appears almost certain was drowned, the horse and gig being also lost. Constables Moriarty (Leeston) and Kearns (Southbridge), together with a party of local residents, searched the banks of the river yesterday, but could find no trace of the body. The search is still proceeding, and a party are watching the mouth of the rivet in | an endeavour to locate the body.

The river is in very high flood, and it is very dangerous for anyone to attempt to cross life. The spot where the fatality occurred. is six miles from tho Southbridge railway station.

TRAM CONDUCTOR INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A tram conductor named Laurie Anderson fell off the 8.48 p.m. car from New Brighton last evening at the corner of Madras and Cashel Streets. Ho was turning the side destination sign at the time and slipped and fell. Ho was taken to the hospital, where it was ascertained that he had received injuries to his head and was suffering from slight concussion.

| ACT OF DESPONDENCY. INVERCARGILL, This Day. Alexander Wilson, a stock buyer, aged 47, married, committed suicide in a private hospital by hanging. A chain was fixed above his bod. He had been in bad health for some time, and was nervous and despondent.

LITTLE BOY’S MISHAP. INVERCARGILL, This Day. Robert Ross McGregor, aged 5). years, fell under a moving train, and had a foot partially severed. He is in the hospital in a serious condition.
