PATRIOTIC GAMBLING.
AN OAMARU PROTEST.
(Per Preps Association).
OAMARU, August 2. At a meeting of the Oamaru Ministers' Association held to-day, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—" : That this Association of the ministers of Oamaru, while rejoicing in the groat generosity' that has been called forth from the people of this district by the appeal for aid for our wounded soldiers, and, while viewing with the greatest satisfaction the spirit of sacrifice that has been evident among all classes, deplores the fact that by means of raffles and art unions the gambling element has entered so largely into the methods of obtaining money. Tins Association feels that a groat danger is being put in the way. of the young people of the community, and trusts that the good sense and Christian sentiment of the public will in future discountenance such means, and will show increasing favour to that spontaneous liberality and self-denial that are more in keeping with the great sacrifico our troops are making on the field of battle."
