ADVANCE HAMPSTEAD!

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENTS

DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The recent fruitless agitation in favour of an amalgamation of the Hampstead Town Board District .with the Borough of Ashburton would appear to have" roused the Town Board into activity. A deputation from the Board which waited on the Borough Council last evening "hinted at a scheme of improvements which was likely to be carried out.

The deputation consisted of Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman of the Board), W. J. Cunningham, and W. Thompson. On behalf of the residents of the North-east Belt, Mr Robinson asked for permission from the Council to lay channelling from East Street to the East Belt. He could not say the exact chainagc.. ■ The Belt was under the control of the Council. , The deputation also asked, if the Council could supply, the water for the -. channelling. Mr Robinson said that at present the Water extended up -East Street- as fatas the Belt, and -could: be extended, round the Belt - into .the proposed channel.

Mr Robinson further asked on what terms the Council would supply five streets in Hampstend with surface water if the Town Board decided to institute a drainage system in its district. It would be a 4 Very easy matter to run the water across from the streets on the Borough side of the East Belt into streets on the opposite side of the- Belt under the control of the Town. Board. "These streets were the Nortli-east Belt, Waknnui Road. Havelock Street, Nelson Street, and Moore Street. As the members were aware,, water went through the Borough as far as the East Beltr The Council had no use for the water when it reached that, distance, and it ran away into the outfall drain. It was understood that the Council intended to increase the size of the outfall drain, and the deputation would like to point out that if it were agreed to supply the Town Board with water and the Town Board formed an outfall drain on Trevor's Road the Council would avoid the expense of increasing its own outfall drain. Possibly the two bodies, Mr Robinson said, could come to some arrangement whereby the Council would help the Town Board to construct a. new outfall drain on Trevor's Road. The residents of the south-east corner, of the district were complaining about the presont outfall drain, and he believed a petition was being circulated asking the Board to close if up, although the Board had nothing;to do with it.

Mr- Cunningham and Mr Thompson also spoke. , - Cr. F. Z. D. Ferrimnn favoured asking the deputation to forward its requests in writing, and to send n sketch plan of what they proposed doing. This idea was. endorsed by other councillors, and. the deputation agreed to do so.
